The Supreme Court has instructed the Punjab government to shift farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike, to a makeshift hospital near the protest site. This decision was made after concerns over his health, as Dallewal continues his fast unto death in protest.

Medical Reports and Court Intervention

Doctors reported that they had conducted medical tests on Dallewal, revealing some abnormal parameters. Though his ECG was normal and his heart condition was stable, his creatinine and uric acid levels were high, indicating the need for medication. The Supreme Court had previously criticized the Punjab government for not conducting timely medical tests and urged the government to prioritize Dallewal’s medical care.

Court’s Order for Immediate Medical Aid

The Supreme Court demanded that the Punjab Advocate General file an affidavit from the Chief Secretary and DGP to ensure that Dallewal is shifted to a makeshift hospital immediately, where he can receive continuous medical attention. The Court emphasized the urgency of medical intervention to avoid further deterioration of his health.

Punjab Government’s Response

The Punjab Advocate General assured the court that the situation was under control, but emphasized the challenge of gaining the cooperation of the protesting farmers. The Court directed the Punjab government to find ways to convince Dallewal to accept medical treatment, allowing him to resume his protest afterward under medical supervision.

The Ongoing Hunger Strike

Dallewal has been fasting at the Khanauri border point, demanding the acceptance of farmers’ rights. His hunger strike has garnered widespread attention, highlighting the ongoing tensions around farmers’ issues in India. The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the importance of balancing protest with personal health and safety.
