Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Intervenes to Support Farmers

The federal government has allowed Punjab farmers to export potatoes and kinno using alternative routes, the Punjab government announced. The decision followed Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s proactive intervention.

“The federal government approved potato and kinno exports thanks to the Chief Minister’s efforts,” the provincial government said.

Surplus Production and Market Challenges

Farmers in Punjab had requested urgent government support because excess production coincided with weak domestic demand and limited export opportunities. Trade disruptions through the Afghanistan border caused potato prices to fall below production costs in districts such as Sahiwal, Okara, Pakpattan, Kasur, and nearby areas.

Some growers had to plough their crops back into the soil to prevent further losses, highlighting the need for immediate government action.

CM Maryam Nawaz Acts to Protect Farmers’ Interests

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stressed that the hard work of potato and kinno farmers must not go to waste. She confirmed that she has maintained constant communication with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to resolve export issues.

The Punjab government proposed a high-level committee to facilitate exports. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar will lead the team, which includes representatives from relevant ministries and stakeholders to coordinate practical solutions.

Opening New Markets and Reducing Export Costs

The Chief Minister said the government is exploring new international markets and taking steps to cut export-related costs, making it easier for farmers and exporters. She stated, “We are taking practical steps daily to solve issues affecting kinno and potato exports and to boost foreign exchange earnings.”

Punjab’s Potato and Kinno Production

Punjab produces roughly 95% of Pakistan’s potatoes and kinno. For 2026:

  • Potato output: 12 million tonnes

  • Kinno output: 4 million tonnes

The alternative export routes aim to stabilize prices, increase farmers’ incomes, and strengthen Pakistan’s agricultural exports.
