A court in Ferozepur district, Punjab has issued arrest warrants for 25 farmers involved in a security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. The incident saw the Prime Minister’s convoy obstructed for over an hour, compromising his safety.
Details of the Incident and Arrest Warrants
The Sessions Judge issued the warrants after an FIR was filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) and National Highway Act. The farmers allegedly blocked a flyover, halting the Prime Minister’s visit to Hussainiwala to honor freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev and to lay the foundation for the PGI Ferozepur satellite centre.
Court’s Decision on Bail Application
Kamaljeet Singh, a 37-year-old farmer from Ferozepur, sought pre-arrest bail. However, his application was denied due to the serious nature of the charges, which include obstructing public roads and creating a security threat by blocking the Prime Minister’s convoy.
Expanded Investigation and Charges
The Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Ferozepur’s SP (Investigations), expanded the case after further investigation. The charges were enhanced under sections 307, 353, 341, 186, 149 of the IPC and Section 8-B of the National Highway Act. Despite earlier attempts, the SIT had not been able to arrest 25 individuals, including Kamaljeet Singh, even after warrants were issued through the Judicial Magistrate’s Court.
