Encounter Conducted by Tarn Taran Police and AGTF

An alleged gangster, wanted in connection with the murder of a village sarpanch in Amritsar, was killed during a police encounter in Tarn Taran district, officials confirmed. The operation was conducted by Tarn Taran police teams along with the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF).

Details of the Encounter

The encounter took place in the Bhikhiwind police station area after police received information about the accused’s movements. The gangster, identified as Harnoor Singh, was linked to criminal operatives Afridi and Prabh Dassuwal and was involved in planning the murder of Sarpanch Jharmal Singh, a local leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Police reported that Singh was riding a motorcycle without a number plate. When signaled to stop, he allegedly opened fire on police personnel. In the retaliatory action, Singh was shot and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. A pistol was recovered from the scene.

Background of the Case

Sarpanch Jharmal Singh was shot dead at a wedding venue in Amritsar. CCTV footage showed two unidentified assailants firing at the victim at close range. The sarpanch had survived three prior attacks, indicating a long-standing threat to his life.

Following the killing, a social media post by Dasuwal, Doni Bal, and associates claimed responsibility. Police investigations revealed that Harnoor Singh was involved in the planning of the murder, while the shooters executed the attack according to his plan.

Police Response and Government Statement

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sneh Deep Sharma, stated that the operation was led by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Tarn Taran. A bullet struck a police officer during the encounter, but he remained unharmed thanks to his bulletproof jacket.

Reacting to the incident, AAP State General Secretary Baltej Pannu praised the Punjab Police for handling law-and-order situations efficiently. He asserted that any individual attempting criminal acts will face strict action, emphasizing that the government under CM Bhagwant Mann is committed to curbing criminal activity in Punjab.
