Haryana Rainfall Deficit Turns Into Surplus

Punjab and Haryana have witnessed a sharp shift in weather conditions as intermittent rainfall over the past 48 hours has pushed temperatures below normal and significantly improved monthly rainfall figures, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Punjab Sees 103% Rainfall Surplus in January

IMD data shows that Punjab received 27.2 mm of rainfall from January 1 to January 24, compared to the long-period average of 13.4 mm, marking a 103% surplus for the month so far.

Several districts experienced heavy rain during this period:

  • Gurdaspur recorded the highest rainfall at 89.6 mm

  • Pathankot followed with 67.1 mm

  • SBS Nagar received 56.1 mm

  • Other districts with notable rainfall include Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Ropar

However, some south-western districts such as Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, and Bathinda are still facing a rainfall shortfall despite recent showers.

Haryana Rainfall Turns Surplus After Deficit

In Haryana, January rainfall has reached 15.2 mm, exceeding the normal average of 10.2 mm and resulting in a 49% surplus. Until Friday, the state had been recording a 33% deficit, which has now reversed due to recent precipitation.

  • Kurukshetra emerged as the wettest district with 42.1 mm

  • Yamunagar recorded 25.1 mm

  • Karnal received 24.2 mm

Meanwhile, districts including Sirsa, Nuh, Faridabad, Panchkula, and Sonepat continue to receive below-average rainfall.

Temperatures Drop Below Normal Across Both States

The recent rain and snowfall in nearby hill regions have led to a noticeable fall in temperatures.

Minimum Temperatures

  • Punjab: 0.8°C in Bathinda to 5°C in Anandpur Sahib, up to 4.8 degrees below normal

  • Haryana: 1.6°C in Hisar to 9.5°C in Faridabad, falling up to 5.4 degrees below normal

Maximum Temperatures

  • Punjab: 11.4°C at Thein Dam to 20.2°C in Ludhiana

  • Haryana: 12.8°C in Ambala to 19°C in Bhiwani

Maximum temperatures in both states remained up to 5.8 degrees below normal, reinforcing cold wave conditions.

Cold Wave, Fog, and More Rain Ahead

The IMD reported light to moderate rainfall at most places in Punjab and Haryana, with cold day conditions at isolated locations. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions were observed in several areas.

Weather Forecast for Coming Days

According to IMD projections:

  • Light to moderate rain is expected at many places on January 27

  • Isolated rainfall may occur on January 24, 26, and 28

  • Minimum temperatures are likely to remain steady for two days, rise by 4–6 degrees, and then fall again by 3–5 degrees

  • Dense fog, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are also expected in some regions

Weather Impact on Daily Life

The combination of heavy rainfall, cold wave conditions, and fog may continue to affect daily commuting, agriculture, and visibility across north-west India in the coming days.

This evolving weather pattern highlights the active winter system currently influencing Punjab and Haryana, bringing both relief from rainfall deficits and challenges from falling temperatures.
