Folk Music at the Core of Punjab’s Cultural Heritage
Punjabi folk music has always reflected rebellion, love, and cultural identity. From harvest songs and Sufi verses by Bulleh Shah and Shah Hussain to wartime ballads, the genre is deeply rooted in Punjab’s history.
While Punjabi hip-hop gained popularity, folk music often took a backseat on social media, overshadowed by catchy wedding songs and party anthems. Today, platforms like TikTok and Instagram are helping folk music make a powerful comeback.
Rise to Fame with ‘Bajre Da Sitta’
Rashmeet Kaur gained recognition for her rendition of the classic ‘Bajre Da Sitta’, which became a viral sensation internationally, first in Canada and later in India.
“Bajre Da Sitta was my turning point. I’ve always loved Punjabi folk music, and this song connected with people deeply,” Kaur said in an interview with SCREEN.
Her interpretation preserved the original melody and lyrics while giving it a fresh, contemporary touch, helping younger audiences connect with Punjabi heritage.
Reality Shows and International Collaborations
Kaur first rose to prominence after winning The Remix, an Amazon Prime music competition judged by Sunidhi Chauhan, Amit Trivedi, and Nucleya. She has since collaborated with Major Lazer, Diplo, and Nucleya, contributing to the Grammy-nominated album “Music Is the Weapon” for the track “Jadi Buti.”
In 2023, she also participated in the TV reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 13, hosted by Rohit Shetty, further expanding her mainstream appeal.
Early Inspirations and Musical Roots
Inspired by her maternal grandmother and the Punjabi wedding traditions she grew up around, Kaur’s passion for folk music developed early.
“Punjabi folk music has been in my blood since childhood. It’s now part of my identity and my musical ‘swag,’” she said.
Her debut single, Maati Ki Guddiya (2018), addressed social issues like child marriages, reflecting her commitment to meaningful music.
Fusing Folk, Poetry, and Modern Beats
Most of Kaur’s music, including Kaura and Musafir Live Sessions, draws inspiration from Sufi poetry and Punjabi legends. She blends folk melodies with hip-hop and boom-bap beats, making it appealing to the younger generation.
“Punjabi folk is timeless, and my role is to connect people with these classic poetries through modern music,” she explained.
Her collaborative work includes writing songs with friends like Yogi, ensuring that poetry remains central to her music.
Global Influences and Artistic Philosophy
Kaur draws inspiration from international artists like Beyoncé, Doechii, FK Twigs, and John Mayer, appreciating their authenticity and dedication to their craft. She believes that true art is about being connected and genuine, a philosophy she applies to her own music.
“What makes these artists captivating is not just the music but the truth and authenticity in their art,” she said.
Promoting Punjabi Folk Worldwide
Rashmeet Kaur’s work emphasizes that Punjabi folk music will never die, as it forms the roots of all regional music. She continues to modernize traditional songs while educating audiences about cultural heritage, ensuring the timeless poetry of Punjab reaches global listeners.
