Visa Restrictions Target Indian States

Australia has started limiting student visa applications from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Jammu & Kashmir. This move aligns with similar immigration actions by Canada and the United States. Major universities like Federation University, Western Sydney University, Victoria University, and Southern Cross University have paused or reduced applications from these regions.

Why the Crackdown?

The Australian government aims to stop misuse of the student visa route. Some applicants reportedly use student visas for non-academic purposes. In response, universities are taking steps to ensure only genuine students get accepted.

Gujarat Students Hit Hard

This change deeply affects students in Gujarat, a state that sends many students to Australia for higher education. Experts estimate that 1 in every 5 students who plan to study abroad from Gujarat prefer Australia. The new rules could sharply reduce those numbers.

Bhavin Thaker, an education consultant, said:

“At least 20% of aspiring overseas students are now directly affected. With Canada and the US already strict, Australia was a safe option. But now, even that is in question.”

Experts Warn of Impact on Genuine Applicants

Consultants worry that genuine students will also suffer under these new restrictions.
Lalit Advani, a visa expert, explained:

“Most students are sincere. You can judge them based on academic records and background. These blanket bans hurt honest students and create confusion.”

Growing Pressure on Global Study Options

Indian students are facing more challenges abroad. As the UK also reviews its post-study visa policy, it becomes harder to choose the right country. Australia, once seen as a backup option, is also becoming more selective. Students now face limited choices for international education.

Australian Government Responds

The Australian High Commission in New Delhi denied reports of an official ban. A spokesperson said the government still welcomes Indian students and processes visas based on global standards.

“India is our second-largest source of international students. We value their contribution and will keep supporting quality education ties,” the statement said.

Final Words for Students

This situation highlights the need for accurate planning. Students should stay informed, work with reliable consultants, and prepare strong applications. Despite restrictions, students who meet the requirements can still pursue their dreams of studying in Australia.
