The Meaning of Dussehra

Dussehra, also called Vijaya Dashami, occurs on the tenth day of the lunar month, following the nine-day festival of Navratri, dedicated to worshipping Goddess Durga in her various forms. The festival emphasizes morality, courage, and righteousness.

A central feature of Dussehra is Ramlila, a dramatic reenactment of the Ramayana. Artists in vibrant costumes portray stories of Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Ravana, culminating in the final battle where Ravana is defeated, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

Effigies and Public Celebrations

In major cities like Delhi, Varanasi, and Amritsar, massive effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran, and Meghnath are prepared and burnt in front of large crowds. These celebrations often include illuminated fairs, rides, food stalls, and cultural events, attracting families and tourists.
